Tribunus Faustus, in charge of Caesar’s legions in the west, battles against the Gauls. Harsh, unforgiving, and deadly on the battlefield, he is wounded by an enemy sword and seeks treatment in Mediolanum. Here, he orders a slave woman, Aia, to tend to him as he heals. Faustus quickly realizes that Aia’s care will go beyond just tending his wound.

In an effort to distract him from the pain, Aia shares stories of her life as a slave, and Faustus finds himself oddly drawn to her. Her gentle care captures Faustus' attention, and as he gets to know her better, he sees her in a different light than just a servant.

Nevertheless, Faustus is intrigued by her warm touch and genuine concern for his well-being, and his inexplicable attraction to her grows stronger.
