In the 1960s in the South, a young Black girl experienced her coming of age. Raised by various women in her community, some of whom were related by blood and some who were not, she lost her mother at a young age. At twelve years old, she embarked on her journey to womanhood, guided by these diverse and non-traditional older Black women. Looking back on her childhood, she reminisces about the vivid memories of her upbringing, including rituals, faith healings, storytelling, and the valuable lessons she learned about survival.
