Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery is a story about a young Black girl's coming of age in the South in the 1960's, adapted from the collection Big Mama Stories. The main character is Daughter, a 25-year-old narrator who lost her mother at a young age. Raised by the women in her community, some of whom were blood relatives and others who were not, Daughter began her journey to womanhood at the age of 12, guided by a diverse group of non-traditional older Black women. As she looks back on her early years, Daughter finds herself reliving vivid memories of her childhood, remembering the rituals, faith healings, stories she was told, and the lessons she learned about survival, healing, faith, and mystery.
