Flying Blind: a play

Flying Blind is a play about a road trip that explores the pursuit of dreams. Floral, a 79-year-old woman, has always dreamed of driving her vintage Buick, Deuce and a Quarter, across the country. She had won the car in a lottery many years ago. One day, while waiting for her son to take her to an assisted living home, she finds herself at a Flying J Truck Stop in Surrender, Alabama. Here, she is approached by sixteen-year-old Cherry, who asks for a ride, and the two embark on an unexpected adventure.

Flying Blind uses the concept of blindness as a metaphor for denial, the deprivation of senses, and the ability to turn a blind eye to brutality, ugliness, pain, war, and suffering as a means of survival. Throughout the play, these themes are explored in depth. The car trip becomes a symbol of Floral's journey to finally living out her dream, as well as her journey towards self-discovery and acceptance. Cherry, on the other hand, represents youthful exuberance and a thirst for adventure, as well as a stark contrast to Floral's experience and wisdom.
